Wrist and finger wearables have made sleep tracking mainstream. Most combine movement sensors with heart-rate and sometimes temperature data, then apply algorithms to estimate when you were asleep and which stage you were in. The results look precise, but precision on a screen is not the same as accuracy against a laboratory reference.
How devices compare to the lab standard
The clinical reference is polysomnography, which records brain waves, eye movement, and muscle activity to stage sleep directly. Against this standard, validation studies show that modern consumer devices are fairly good at detecting total sleep time and whether you are asleep or awake. They are considerably weaker at distinguishing light, deep, and REM sleep, because those stages are defined by brain activity the devices cannot measure. Accuracy also varies by device generation and by sleeper.
Using the numbers sensibly
- Watch trends across weeks, not individual nightly scores.
- Correlate the data with how you actually feel and function during the day.
- Treat stage percentages as rough estimates, not medical readouts.
- Use the device to test one change at a time, such as a consistent bedtime.
A wearable is a coach with limited vision, not a diagnostic instrument. It can nudge better habits, but it cannot diagnose a sleep disorder.
The risk of tracking too hard
Clinicians have described a pattern sometimes called orthosomnia, where fixating on sleep scores creates anxiety that undermines sleep itself. If checking your score first thing in the morning shapes your whole mood, the tool may be working against you. Persistent problems such as loud snoring with pauses, unrefreshing sleep, or severe daytime sleepiness deserve evaluation by a professional rather than reliance on an app.
Used lightly, these devices are a reasonable way to build awareness of routines and consistency. Used compulsively, they can add stress. Let the data inform gentle experiments, and give more weight to how rested you feel than to any generated number.
